Bedtime tales for kids that even parents will enjoy

These bedtime stories are also written so that Mom and Dad don’t go out of their skulls reading them. The novelty of some rhyming kiddie books can wither after the thirtieth or fortieth reading. Most of our books are designed to be read to the child a few times with the hope that the young reader then picks up the book to read it again on their own. This is how children learn to read far above their expected grade level. With beautifully hand drawn illustrations that track the story, your child will always be able to easily follow along with the story.

Why some kids book publishers only offer the best

Major publishers of kid’s books such as Harper and Collins or Random house routinely publish two hundred titles for children each year. Random House probably produces another three hundred titles through its imprint divisions. But are these books any good. Truly some are, as these big publishers win award after prestigious award every year. Still these books tend to follow formulas and offer little in the way of dynamic inspirational content. Morningside Books publishes four books a year. It is all our budget will allow. But because of this limitation we make sure every one of our books is better than any other children’s book brought out, regardless of the size of the publishing house.

Massive online superstores don’t offer all the best books from small publishers

When shopping for kids books online there are two approaches one can take. First you can buzz onto Amazon or Barnes and Noble to see what they are proffering for the month. This leads you to some excellent award winning children’s books. It also leads you to a collection of garbage written and published expressly to turn a high profit. A unique alternative is to look at the select range of books published by Morningside Books. These are books from one of America’s leading independent publishers. They are written and illustrated to the highest standard. Even the construction of these books is superior.

What makes a children’s book genuinely good?

How do we determine, out of all the available children’s stories, which are good books for kids? Don’t settle for second rate online children’s books

When looking online, books for kids can mean two things. Often the first thing people connect with online books for kids are stories that can be read directly from their computer. In the case of children’s books these are usually of very poor quality. Apparently the low cost of creating a book in this way lends itself to a pitiful production. The next connection people make with online books is that of books for sale. Obviously mega websites such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble excel at offering hundreds of thousands of titles at discount prices.

Shifting trends in story books for kids

Yes, kid’s stories have changed dramatically over the last 20 years. The cause of this can only be attributed to the advance of the information age. Mass communication and accompanying high tech graphics have so impacted children’s publishing that unless a book resembles Pixar production, it scarcely gets noticed. Still, there is a contingent of book publishers such as Morningside Books that hold fast to the old ideals of what books for children should be. If one word were to be used to describe the children’s books from Morningside, it would be enchanting.

Books inspired by the imagination of classic children’s stories

I remember as a child reading marvelous short stories by authors such as O’henry and Mark Twain. And whether the story carried a serious and heartwarming theme as in “The Gift of the Magi,” or a ridiculously whimsical ending as in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” these children’s short stories always left me feeling better about myself and life in general. It is with thoughts of stories such as this in mind that I set about to write my books “Bartram and the Blue Morning Glory,” and “The Heart of Nine Tigers.”

The impact a surprise twist can have in children’s books

Children’s books thrive on the element of surprise. The ending whereby the characters are surprised at a result allows the young reader to share in that surprise. The story value is raised further when an epiphany is also the result. But that emotional catharsis is not found in every book for kids published. In fact it is rarely found at all. You will find an inspirational surprise in every story from Morningside Books. Sometimes the message will be quiet and thoughtful as is the case in “Bartram and the Blue Morning Glory.” Other times the impact on the reader is deeply pronounced as in our adventure story, “The Heart of Nine Tigers.”

Children’s books that offer positive life lessons

Children’s reading books should always contain a few key ingredients. They should have characters young people can identify with, a strong theme and emotional balance. It is all too easy to write a book wherein shock value is the most important ingredient. But stories that turn from dark to darker seldom instill in the young reader a sense of well being. Stories from Morningside Books are strong on positive life affirming values. The good guys always win and villains get comeuppance. Whether the story is centered on a young girl in ancient China as in “The Heart of Nine Tigers,” or a little mouse from “Bartram and the Blue Morning Glory,” your child will be touched by the character’s goodness.

The delicate balance of techniques required in writing a book for children

Books for children is an interesting term. For when we write, draw and generally create kid’s books we do so with a set of standards most would find impossible to adhere to. Writing children’s books requires incredible restraint. We must not use too complicated a vocabulary, but we must also never “dumb down” to our audience. We want the stories that children read to educate and inspire them. With this in mind one of the latest offerings from Morningside Books, “Alligators Can’t Stand Butterflies” manages to do both of these things very well.

What story books for kids are meant to be

Isn’t this what storybooks for children should be? We want the stories our kids read to do for them what stories like The Ugly Duckling did for us when we were children. We want our children gifted by a sense of wonder as they realize the little duckling became a beautiful swan. Stories for children such as this are timeless. The books for kids from Morningside are also created with a similar eye to an everlasting legacy of the heart. Morningside publishes books that are good for your child’s mind and soul.

Creating an educational kids book by blending history and entertainment

Combining an educational experience with a great little story is often the goal when writing historical fiction books for children. Indeed stories like “Johnny Tremain” wherein the reader learns firsthand what life was like for children during the revolutionary war allow great learning to enter a child’s mind in the form of marvelous entertainment. Our story, “The Heart of Nine Tigers” set in ancient China is also such a story. The young reader shares a special day when the Mighty Mongol leader Genghis Khan rides to conquer the small village of Ming Po.

A realistic children’s novel set in 1960′s rural Florida

Of course realistic fiction books for children don’t have to be set hundreds of years in the past or in faraway lands. The award winning book “The Yearling” takes place in the center of rural Florida during the 1930s. Likewise, “The Midget Green Swamp Moose,” from Morningside Books is set in the rural Florida Panhandle woodlands during 1963. Both of these fine examples of children’s literature offer a dramatically realistic view of those unique lives and times. We want our children to gain an understanding of how kids just like them laughed and lived just a few generations ago.

Christian themes projected in a young adult novel

Do Christian books for children always have to directly quote the Bible or simply restage a parable? Take a look at “The Midget Green Swamp Moose,” This powerful young adult novel is filled with important Christian messages and themes. But these are presented as part of the character’s developed insights. By suggesting Christian ideals in this way, young readers are not pressured into any belief. Rather they are given any opportunity to find God in their own hearts as do the various characters in the story. In fact, the difference between central character Melanie Fowler’s slowly developed faith in God with that of her brother Bret’s “instant” found faith is a major point of contrast.

How characters come to find faith in The Midget Green Swamp Moose

Melanie, sits and squirms during church services, barely able to contain herself. Yet while attending a revival later that week she is one of the few attendees who genuinely considers what God means to her. Her older brother Bret finds God through his need for comfort after tragedy. In both cases, God is given the place at the head of the table in “The Midget Green Swamp Moose,” another of the insightful yet lively Christian children’s books from Morningside Books. Set in rural Florida circa 1963 the book allows today’s young adult reader to weigh the changes in adopting faith that have evolved over these last 50 years.

Biblically inspired stories for children young and old

Don’t look for another retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark from the publishers at Morningside Books. Bible stories for kids from Morningside are far more likely to depict and explain less known parables such as that of The Kings Marriage Feast or The Parable of the Mustard Seed. The reason for this is that the children’s stories published by Morningside Books have plots developed around important themes taken from these parables. Noah and the animals two by two may be entertaining, but other lessons in faith are more Christ centered.

Biblical themes in current children’s stories

Still it is hard to resist retelling traditionally popular kids Bible stories. Children tremendously enjoy the story of Noah and the Ark. Imagine though the grandeur of passing along to a child truly Christian ideals in new stories that speak to the child at precisely their level of understanding. That is what the editors at Morningside Books always attempt to do in every book they produce. Whether the central character is a tiny mouse or a child in prayer, the reader is taught through that character themes from important Bible parables.

How Bible stories are made easier to grasp in modern literature

Consider the story of the prodigal son. Seldom has literature produced a better example of forgiveness and unconditional love than this. Indeed the story has been retold a hundred times in other forms. Look no further than John Steinbeck’s East of Eden to see once again the story of Cain and Abel retold. Yes the characters and setting are changed to fit the times, but doesn’t this make the story easier to absorb? This same approach is used by Morningside books to bring Bible stories for children to life. You may rest assured that in every story from Morningside Books the hand of God is clearly seen.
